Install Ubuntu within a Virtual Machine (VMWare or VirtualBox)

How to Install Linux Mint in VMware

Lecture Overview

  • In this lecture I demonstrate how to go about how to create a virtual machine (consider this a 'virtual' physical computer), and install Linux Mint within the 'VM.'
  • You may use either VMWare Workstation (or Fusion for the Mac) or VirtualBox.
  • We will use the Linux Mint for the course.  We will NOT use the graphical interface (for the most part), only the terminal/console/shell as most servers do not automatically install a GUI.
  • If you already have a previous version of Mint or Ubuntu you use that's fine. It doesn't matter, they work exactly the same from the terminal standpoint.

       Timeline:

    • Download Mint:                 00:00:14
    • Create a VM for Mint:        00:02:12
    • Install VMWare Tools:        00:15:22
    • Creating a shared folder:    00:20:38
    • Creating a snapshot            00:21:28
    • Drag-n-drop demo             00:23:07  (this may or may not work in Mint18. You really don't need it. Setup a shared folder and you are good to go!)

INSTRUCTIONS FOR DOWNOADING VMWARE and Linux Mint

  • You should receive an email in your school email from VMware IT Academy. DO NOT DELETE THIS EMAIL. It has instructions on how to complete the registration of your VMware account

  • Once your account has been registered, you can login at: https://itacademy.brightspace.com/d2l/home
  • Log back into the WMWare academic site using your username and new password.
  • Download VMWare Workstation (latest version). Remember where you downloaded the file!
  • You should receive an email in your Falconmail with a license key after it is requested that you will cut and paste into the appropriate field during the installation process.
  • Find the installation file and double click it to begin the installation process.  When asked for the authorization code, copy & paste the code from your Falcomail email into the appropriate textbox (or type it, careful not to make mistakes).
  • STORE YOUR AUTHORIZATION CODE IN A SAFE PLACE, IF YOU NEED TO INSTALL AGAIN YOU WILL NEED THAT INFORMATION (e.g., DO NOT delete the email, so you will always have access to the code).
  • You should now have a fully functioning version of VMWare Workstation! I will create and post a video that demonstrates how to install Linux within a virtual machine. Or you can try it yourself.
  • Note that you can only request a key for EACH available product only once per 12-months from this site.
  • To download Linux Mint go to:
  • Select the 'No CODECS' version and the appropriate architecture (note that 32-bit will run on both 32- and 64-bit architecture machines).
